Melbourne Bike Share
It was whilst walking through the city at dusk a few weeks ago, I spotted a couple happily chatting whilst returning their bright blue bikes to a docking station on Swanston Street. After they disappeared into the night, I took a closer look. All bikes are in lovely “new” condition, and just beckoning to be ridden as part of the recently launched Melbourne Bike Share initiative.
Public share bike schemes have been a resounding success in many international cities. Lyon, Barcelona, Stockholm and Paris amongst others all boast well used free bike share schemes, and in June this year Melbourne became the first Australian city to install bike stations at various locations across town.
Designed for short term use, bike riders can use the bikes for up to half an hour for a basic fee, and can return it to any of the racks installed across the city. So if you are running late for a meeting, just missed your tram to the other side of town (or to Melbourne University), or a tourist wanting to sightsee, you can grab a bike and be on your way in no time!
50 bike stations situated around town, enable easy drop off before your ½ hr is up!
Users can purchase a subscription for a day ($2.50), a week ($8) or year ($50) and as long as your trips last less than 30 minutes that’s all you’ll pay. Trips longer than 2hrs rise exponentially so beware! One other word of warning – all riders must still comply with Australia’s compulsory helmet laws, so unlike other international cities that have waived this requirement, you will not be able to make a spur of the moment decision to ride away into the sunset – remember to BYO helmet!
If you have used the Melbourne Bike Share scheme, we would love to hear your views!
