Interview: RAW ~ macrame beach terrarium design

Terrariums have gained a resurgence of sorts over the past two years, with beautifully crafted mini landscapes popping up inside all manner of glass receptacles.  The most recent take on terrarium design that has caught my eye is from a brand new Melbourne based business, named RAW.  Reinterpreting the more traditional moss laden terrarium, freelance graphic design Caitlin Wynne instead creates sandy beach terrariums suspended in traditional hand knotted macrame hangers.

terrarium, beach terrarium,

terrarium, sand terrarium

Caitlin has graphic design running in her blood. Her grandfather was also a graphic designer and sign writer, and her own passion was ignited after completing her degree in Communication design and living in Denmark for 4 years. There, she embraced the Danes eco friendly way of life, got involved in the craft of macrame and upon her return to Australia decided to combine her love of all things knotty, sustainable and beachy to create the beachy terrariums.

Caitlin is one lovely lass, and was ever so gracious to be featured on State of Green. She graciously shared with us a little more about her brand new business;

1. What inspired you to launch Studio Raw and make beachy terrariums?  I’m one of those people who have always had a passion for both handcraft and the outdoors, however this passion exploded during my 4 years of living in Copenhagen, Denmark. Denmark is one of the greatest Eco-Friendly nations in the world and to them, it is just a way of life. This quickly became my way of life and fuelled my passion. Whilst in Copenhagen, I also learnt (amongst many other handcrafts) the art of Macramé. When moving back to Melbourne I decided to combine my skill in Macramé with my love for the garden and a very ingrained love for the beach. My Macramé Beach Terrarium Hangers were born. I originally started making these for my friends and family but then began receiving requests for these pieces and decided to open RAW.

2. How do you care for the terrariums to ensure they last?  Each Beach Terrarium is made up of Coral, Shells, Sand and Air Plants. The air plants are amazingly easy to care for as they use moisture and nutrients from the air around them to stay alive. To maintain perfect health and growth of each air plant it is best to spray the plant with water once a

week and give them good (but not direct) sunlight.

3. What challenges do you face when making terrariums?  No two beach terrariums I create are the same. Each one is very unique and there is a great choice of air plants and gorgeous shells available. On the other hand, obtaining beautiful coral isn’t easy (especially living in Melbourne). Coral is really the charm and vibrance of a beach terrarium and in Australia coral is very special. Luckily my love for the beach and the underwater world has lead me to exploring Australia and has helped me acquire a great range of beautiful coral from the Australian shores. I’m very proud of my coral collection and love that I can send each of these well travelled corals on a journey to a new home.

4. Can you share with us what we might expect to see from StudioRaw in the future?  I really hope for RAW to spread across Melbourne and to bring a little piece of beach, garden and vintage design into the homes of Australia. I will continue to expand my beach terrariums and macramés with new designs, materials and ideas.

5.  Share with us your easy eco living tip:  Fill your home with gorgeous greenery so that you fill your home with clean fresh air.

The perfect bike storage solution for small dwellings

Do you have limited storage at your home to store your bike?  A common issue amongst inner city dwellers, is where to store their two wheeled eco friendly mode of  transport.  Some are awkwardly stored down terrace house hallways, others take up valuable floor space in small laundries and bedrooms, and some just don’t even get a guernsey as the storage issue is all too hard.  Is this resonating with you? I’m hoping today’s piece showcasing the simple but ingenious design of Latvian design firm Chrome Limited may go some way to solving your storage issues.

Chrome Ltd, bike storage, bike wall stand

Chrome Ltd, bike rack, apartment bike rack

Made from birch, the FIXA, latin for “fixed” is a multi purpose wall mounted bike shelf that not only picks your bike up from the floor and tucks it in close the wall, but also functions as a storage unit for all your bits and pieces.  Imagine pedalling home, storing your bike up out of the way, putting down your keys, wallet and sunglasses all in the one place.  For me, this would be bliss. No need to search

for everything next time you head out the door – just grab it all and off you go again.  Talk about making life easy! The timber panel on top also opens for a handy little hidy place for extra items too.

The only issue you may have with this piece, is if you ride a woman’s style bike without the top cross bar.  Perhaps that should be Chrome Limited’s next design solution!

Nudie Jeans lead by example encouraging slow fashion

Clothing companies like Nudie Jeans are bucking the trend of selling fast fashion. They are encouraging consumers to hold onto their jeans for as long as possible, and are setting the bar high for a sustainable fashion future.  Finding the perfect pair of jeans is gold.  Unlike other pieces of clothing, it is often an emotive day when you realise your comfortable jeans are beyond their use by date.  But Nudie Jeans appreciates the attachments

we make to these second skins, and offer a fantastic service that is second to none, by offering to extend the life of your jeans in more than one way.

recycled jeans

If you don’t want to part with your beloved jeans that have worn through at the knee or your derriere, you can take your jeans back to a Nudie Jeans store for them to repair them for free. That’s right ~ FREE!  If in the unfortunate instance they are really beyond repair, you can leave them at the store and get 20% off your next pair which could be a nice soft and aged repaired or re-used pair of jeans which they also sell. Imagine that – no need to break them in or wait for them to gain the lovely patina of faded age!

Recycled jeans

For those jeans that are well and truly worn out, Nudie Jeans have just started cutting them down to strips which are then sewn together, spun onto spools and hand loomed into sturdy and attractive floor rugs.

Taking the reduce, reuse, recycle initiative even further, the Nudie Jeans Recycle Denim Maniacs project has been established to challenge up and coming designers to recreate old Nudie denim into brand new designs. Love it!

Nudie Jeans

Originating in Gothenburg, Sweden, Nudie Jeans now have stores and stockists spotted all over the globe (a store opened in Brisbane today!). Let’s hope others in the fashion industry stand up and take note of Nudie Jeans great fashion and environmental initiatives – What a fun place the fashion world could be if they all followed suit!

Postscript: Just in case you are wondering, this is not a sponsored post. I’m just darn impressed by Nudie Jeans ethos and just had to share ~ Jenny

Are upcycled teacups your cup of tea?

It is no secret that the British love a good cuppa tea, but UK designer Abigail MaryRose Clark of MaryRoseClark has taken it to a whole new level ~ you could say she is creating a storm in a  teacup.  Fascinated by the variety of intricate patterns that adorn all bone china teacups, she is now transforming old and damaged bone china into beautiful pieces of jewellery that beguile their original form.

Stay Gold Mary Rose

StayGoldMaryRose

Graduating in 2006 in 3D Art and Design and Metalwork, Abigail is a strong believer in repurposing and upcycling beautiful objects that

have outlived their original use or purpose.  Transforming chinaware into delicate bangles certainly hits the mark. Whether your a traditionalist or modernist, there’s a style for you.  I love the nostalgic floral designs with gold rims that remind me of the days I sipped cups of tea in my grandmothers kitchen. These classic designs contrast with the more uniform patterned contemporary designed teacup,  which forms the perfect cuff.

What do you think of these reclaimed bone china bangles. Are they your cup of tea?

Maxjenny creates cutting edge sustainable fashion made from pet bottle fibre

Sustainable fashion is going from strength to strength. Once branded as boring, unfashionable and uninspiring, it now appears in high fashion house ranges, and is increasingly becoming part of the common fashion language. Copenhagen based Maxjenny Forslund of maxjenny is one such designer who is creating stand out sustainable fashion, and almost showing off to fashion industry leaders just what can be achieved with a little sustainable design ingenuity!.

MaxJenny

MaxJenny

MaxJenny

On first sight alone, Maxjenny’s poncho’s stand out as a high fashion piece with their bright colours, artistic prints and stylish cut. So are you wondering what the sustainable design features are? When designing the poncho, Maxjenny strove to defy seasonal trends by creating a piece that could be used year round, and that could be made from quality materials – in this case rainproof recycled pet-bottle fibre fabric printed with waterbased ink.

MaxJenny

MaxJenny

A signature of Maxjenny’s creations is also the limited seams that appear in each creation. Maxjenny instead prefers to fold  and drape fabric and says “my inspiration originates from within myself and is highly personal

– for me real fashion is simply art”.

If you look closely at the ponchos, you will see there is no shoulder seam, side seam nor middleback seam. A simple zip runs up the centre, and a little pocket is hidden inside to store your essentials.

I just love this design – It would sit equally well on the sidelines of a local footy match, up high street on a wet shopping day,  and would get me to a smart soiree on a damp evening. Love it!

Sustainable fashion finds at Modavanti

Modavanti

Vegan leather “James” dress and recycled gold Eos Breast Plate

Modavanti

Silk “Byron” blouse

When I was a younger gal,

I spent hours on a Saturday traipsing through Melbourne’s city laneways, shopping for clothes, with nary a thought about how they were made, where and by whom.

But with a new understanding that the clothes we wear have a direct impact on the health of our planet and its people, I now want to shop in a more responsible way. Problem is, much of the time when I go into a boutique or visit an online store, there is no information on the provenance of the garments on display, leaving me with the frustrating realisation that I need to do a truckload of research before I even set out.

It’s enough to make me want to boycott the fashion industry altogether!

However, there are a handful of entrepreneurs blazing a trail towards a greener fashion future.

Modavanti.com is one of them, a new online sustainable fashion retailer based in Brooklyn, New York, which has picked up on the discontent of socially conscious fashion consumers. Modavanti.com have tackled the issue head-on by labelling stock to alert consumers to the particulars of each item’s “green” credentials.

What a good idea! Surely, this is the way of the future for Australian retailers. I don’t want to be kept in the dark anymore. I want to know what I’m purchasing.

This week, I contacted director of operations Adam Clancy to find out more about Modavanti.com. By way of introduction, he said: “We believe that ethical and sustainable practises in the fashion industry are the next big wave to affect consumers directly. This transition to a more sustainable mindset has occurred in other lifestyle arenas such as home, beauty and food. Now it’s fashion’s turn, and we want to be leading that movement.” So began our QandA.

1. What is Modavanti.com? It’s a new online shopping destination for contemporary sustainable fashion. Our mission is to promote the sustainable fashion movement by building an active community around a curated and social shopping experience. Basically, we want to bring sustainable fashion into the mainstream by showcasing incredible designers who are producing with an eco-friendly and ethically sourced mindset. For us, it’s about fashion first, because let’s face it – the clothes have to look great. We don’t ship beyond the US just yet but I hope you take a moment to look around the site and let me know what you think!

Modavanti

100% Silk Indian Summer scarf, Handcrafted Berber Kilim Boots & handcrafted sunglasses ~ proceeds support Reporters without Borders

2. Who founded the site and what inspired its beginning?  The site was founded by David Dietz. David founded Modavanti.com because he believes passionately in the potential of for-profit businesses to do social good and believes that his generation – Gen Y – has an obligation to protect the environment and promote labor rights. The fashion industry, in particular, has been slow to change the way it operates. To give you one example, it takes 400 gallons (1514.2 litres) of water to grow enough cotton to produce just one cotton t-shirt. This is clearly an unsustainable path and we believe that by promoting designers who are producing clothes in a more socially conscious manner, we can bring about real change within the fashion industry.

Modavanti

Double Silk Georgette “Tully” Dress

3. How do you choose the designers on your site?  Our designers are chosen very carefully. We want to have a finely curated selection that represents the very best in sustainable fashion.

To achieve this broad appeal, we recognise that no matter how good a product or a brand is from an environmental or labor perspective, nobody is going to wear it unless they look great. We have a specific aesthetic we are trying to achieve and our fashion team takes a lot of time to select and curate the product we sell on Modavanti.com

Modavanti

Modavanti

100% Raffia “Sunflower” Carryall

4. How would you describe that aesthetic?  Our aesthetic is contemporary and energetic.

We will let you know when Modavanti start shipping outside USA. In the meantime, have a look through the Modavanti range, and let Adam Clancy know what you think of his new socially conscious fashion store.

GIVEAWAY : Organic Cotton Pillowcases by Pillow Poet

We have a wonderful giveaway for you all today! Kaye Thompson, the fabulous designer behind the brand Pillow Poet is providing one of you the opportunity to win a pair of her quirky organic cotton pillowcases!  Pillow Poet is just under two years old, and since launch Kaye has introduced a range of organic pillowcases, in addition to posters printed on bamboo/cotton archival rag stock and lampshades too. Kaye was kind enough to share her story with us in our interview below ~ be sure to read her story, then enter the giveaway at the bottom of this post!

1. When did you launch Pillow Poet?

We launched Pillow Poet at the Melbourne Design Market in July 2011 with the Owl Facts and Parliament Pillowcases printed on Certified 100% Organic cotton. We had an amazing response to the brand, so it was pretty exciting!!

We also had the large Format Art Quality A-Z Poetic Posters, featuring quirky, unusual and oft forgotten words. They’re printed on Archival 90% Bamboo and 10% Cotton rag paper. They look great framed or hanging on oversized bulldog clips. They’re now available in both Large Format and Mini and they make for original and informative wall art! Pillow Poet has also appeared at Markit at Federation Square, Magnolia Square, Piccadilly Market and most recently at Design Made Trade 2012 – held at the beautiful heritage listed Exhibition Buildings in Carlton. By then the brand had grown to include the “Wake Up In Love” range. Nothing like spreading a little more love around!

Pillow Poet

2. What inspired you to launch the brand?

As a rule, I’ve always worked on other people’s brands but for some time I’d had an ambition to create my own brand.  At the time there wasn’t anyone producing bed linen that was quirky, inspiring and engaging. I wanted to create pillowcases that were fun to sleep on and equally good to wake up with!

I love the idea that Pillow Poet Pillowcases and Posters are now decorating bedrooms all over Australia, New Zealand and as far afield as France, England, Scotland, Italy, Slovenia, Canada and Sweden…just to name a few.  Spreading a little genius and love as they go!

I have a small but growing band of devoted Pillow Poet customers who buy pillowcases and posters for themselves as well as presents for friends and family Birthdays, Christmas, Engagements, Weddings, Mother’s Day etc. When they think…I need a present…they think of Pillow Poet! I love that!

3. Why do you use organic cotton?

I’ve been buying organic food for years and I’ve always done my best to be kind to the environment, so I’d never have it any other way! The Pillow Poet brand is aimed at a creative thinking, clever, design savvy and thoughtful buyer. I thought that these people – like me, would want to be kind to the environment.

Most importantly…conventionally grown cotton is one of the largest polluters worldwide. Traces of chemicals used to eliminate weeds and insects remain in fabrics even after washing. These chemicals can affect your nervous system and respiratory system, causing headaches and dizziness, eye, nose and throat irritations as well as sleep, concentration and memory problems! So sleeping in bed linen free of toxic dyes or cotton sprayed with harsh chemicals just makes sense. And apart from that, Organic Cotton is so beautiful and so smooth. Without the chemicals the cotton plants grow stronger and as a result the organic cotton is stronger than conventional cotton. Honestly

once you sleep on Certified Organic Cotton, you’ll never want to sleep on anything else!

pillow poet

 4. What can we expect to see from Pillow Poet next?

I’ve got some exciting plans for Pillow Poet.  I’m hoping to be able to sell the matching organic white Sheets and Doona covers through the Pillow Poet website soon!

Of course there are always new Pillowcase designs on the drawing board as well but I only just released new designs before Christmas 2012, so I’m getting those out and about at the moment. Mostly I’ve extended the Wake Up In Love range….but there’s a few other fun designs as well.

Taking camping to new heights in a tree tent

Tree tent

Tree tent

Could you holiday up in the trees in one of these tree tents? I would be up there in a flash! Three talented UK based engineers and good friends put their heads together, and collaborated over a three year period to develop this very cool and innovative camping accommodation propped up high in the treetops. Inspired by the Yurt and teepee design, Jason Thawley (a mechanical and architectural engineer), Duncan Ritchie (a production and automotive engineer), and Alasdair Ritchie (an aircraft/ballooning engineer) wanted to  introduce a low impact version, that could be used throughout the year for all

sorts of endeavours ~ recreation, research, conservation or education.

Tree tent

Treetent

If I stepped inside one of these tree tents, I think you would almost have to prise me out of this cozy cocoon like structure. Inside this 3metre sphere are two suspended beds, and a lovely warming pot belly stove. Fear not those worrying about a fire inside your “tent”, as heat proof metal plates, an insulated flue and fireproof canvas will keep you safe and warm. And just in case this didn’t warm your cockles, the tent also features 100% wool winter thermal liner, allowing you to bunker down no matter what the weather is throwing at you from outside.

Tree tent

Suspended between 3-4 trees, the tree tent weighs 120kgs, but can support a further 250kg. It is made from locally sourced sustainably forested timbers, recycled aluminium and 100% Cotton Canvas.  These tents may well be classified as glamping by traditionalists, although you will have to clamber down the ladder to attend to your ablutions ~ no ensuites here!

If you don’t quite have the finances to fork out 8,000 pound for a tree tent, you can try out the experience in the English woodlands at Red Kite Barn (4 hour drive from London), or at The Secret Campsite in East Sussex (tree tents opening May 2013). If anyone is lucky enough to try out a Tree Tent, please let us know in the comments field below. I will live vicariously through you!
