Giveaway: Double pass to screening of Waste Land

Who loves going to the movies? A new and thought provoking  film named Waste Land is being released THIS week, documenting the story and amazing artwork created by the “catadores” in Brazil, who work on the worlds largest rubbish dump – Jardim Gramacho located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro.

Waste Land film, Muniz

The film follows the journey of renowned artist Vik Muniz who travels to his native Brazil to photograph an eclectic band of “catadores” – self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Whilst it was Muniz’s initial objective to “paint” the catadores with garbage, the collaboration evolved into them creating artistic images of themselves out of garbage.  This incredible artwork created from all manner of waste materials have since sold for hundreds of thousands dollars, and the money returned to the community to help them transform their lives.

Showing the accumulation of ‘stuff’ (i.e. garbage) that our consumerism produces in a constructive way which brings money into the local community who deal with it is an amazing way to spread the message – our lifestyles are harming the planet… but there’s always some positive action that can be taken!

  2. Sonya says:

Looks like a really interesting film; I hope to see some of the geography of the place as well.

  3. Christina says:

The creation of such beautiful work from waste is so inspiring. The benefits and opportunities generated for these communities is awesome. But the sheer volume of waste is simply overwhelming. I really hope that this film helps to communicate the need to be responsible for what we consume!

  4. Effie Bakkalis says:

Wow, what a magnificent looking film. Might take my son to see this, to show him how people’s throw-away attitude in this “material world” leads to so much waste…

  5. Lauren Burke says:

This looks great !! Have been looking for something of value to go and watch !!

  6. Sally M says:

I’d love to see this movie. I started to look at my incoming ‘stuff’ during ‘buy nothing new month’ and now I’m starting to look more closely at what leaves the house and what can be reused. We’ve already reduced our waste by half and I’m sure this film would be an inspiration to reduce it by much more!
