Whilst driving the car I am quite the radio station skimmer, not staying too long on the one station before moving on – A snippet from each and I’m easily pleased. But one talkback program on Tuesday held my attention with an interview with Josh Klein from Melbourne based company KARTON who import flat packed furniture with a difference.
Constructed from high grade corrugated cardboard that is a mix of virgin and recycled paper, the KARTON furniture range comes flat packed for assembly, and requires NO hardware to assemble the pieces – imagine that, no allen keys or fiddly screw headaches!. Instead the pieces fold and slot into each other to form sturdy but light pieces of furniture that can be easily moved, stored (can be flattened again) or at the end of their use, recycled.
Whilst cardboard furniture may not be everybody’s cup of tea, we can imagine this range will attract quite a bit of interest. Students can relatively cheaply furnish their bedroom in shared housing. Pop up shops, market installations and exhibitions could be furnished in a flash and packed away for reuse at a later date, and I expect a few funky office spaces may be created too. Best of all, you can add your own artistic flair to your furniture piece, as paint and varnish only improves the product by creating a protective layer over the cardboard!.
There are additional storage units, baristas tables, dining tables and stools …. and they deliver nationwide. You can view the entire KARTON product range online.

Gosh I wish my grown up kids had this instead of all the old junk furniture they keep leaving with us to store while they go off around the world!
