Two months ago we gushed over the quality of the 90 odd entries submitted to the 11th Australian Timber Design Awards 2010. The national winners have just been announced across 22 categories, and it was great to see many had included recycled timbers in their designs.

2010 Australian Timber Design Award: David Boyle Architect for Burridge Read Residence
The Burridge Read Residence located on the central coast of NSW took out the grand prize – the Australian Timber Design Award. Judges were impressed by its use of new and recycled timbers (recycled blackbutt flooring, recycled sleepers used for driveway and benches), handcrafted timber joinery and the sympathetic use of timber to meld the house into the surrounding National Park.

Built on a small footprint this small urban home in Brunswick, Victoria is packed full of worthy environmental features. Heating and cooling issues are smartly dealt with through heated concrete slabs circulating heat, and strategically placed windows and timber battens maximise heat gain in winter, and minimise it in summer. Its northern orientation lets in natural light to living areas, and externally the building is clad in durable natural finishes.

Best Use of Recycled Timber: Poune Design for Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat Spa Sanctuary
The Spa Sanctuary at Gwinganna in the Gold Coast hinterland used reclaimed timbers from local wharfs, bridges, telegraph poles and old buildings to create a stunningly crafted building !.

People’s Choice Award: Day Bukh Architects for Regatta Foreshore Kiosk & Amenities building
The People’s Choice Award was taken out by the Regatta Foreshore Kiosk and Amenities Building located at Lake Macquarie in NSW which included 4 different types of timber, including recycled red ironbark.
