It is always exciting when it is time to get a new mobile phone. There are a lot of things to weigh up – functionality, technological advancements, style and price…..But how many of us consider its end of life options and whether it has been designed for upgrades and disassembly?

The Secret Life of Things Project (SLOT), created by Leyla Acaroglu of eco design consultancy business EcoInnovators,  launched its’ first animated short film at the State of Design Festival in Melbourne last week. Entitled Life Pscycle-ology, the film is a quirky and humorous look at the life story of an unhappy discarded mobile telephone.

Life Pscycle-ology is the first in more animated films to come, to be produced as part of the SLOT Project exploring product life cycle usage and sustainability in design.  The film compliments the wonderful SLOT online learning resource created by Leyla Acaroglu for educators and students to explore issues surrounding life cycle thinking & eco design. The aim of the website is to help inspire the next generation of designers to consider the environmental impact of their choices.  The film and learning resources, are set to be tested by six Australian universities, and can be accessed FREE – Did you hear that schools? FREE!.

In the words of Leyla, “Ecodesign is often wrongly seen as complex and costly, but in fact it’s simply good design that offers financial, social and environmental benefits….. If designers embrace sustainability, we can create consumer goods with the smallest possible ecological footprint”

SLOT won seed funding from the British Council’s ‘Big Green Idea competition and is supported by Victoria’s Environmental Protection Authority (EPA).  To obtain further information on the resources available visit The Secret Life of Things website.

ha, thats a very thought provoking video. Its mind boggling to think of the number of phones and other personal electronic equipment lying around in peoples drawers, I’ve actually got 2 old phone on the desk in front of me next to my current one…hmmm. Great to hear that some forward thinking companies are able to salvage these items and make money doing it. If they can help the environment and make money at the same time then they are doing well in my book. Great blog keep it up!
