Smiling Planet owners, Olivia Haviland and Freddy Deane are a creative duo. With backgrounds in design, art, advertising and writing it should be no surprise they have developed an impressive sustainable brand by creating a refreshingly smart range of recycled plastic tableware, books, posters and clothing.
Smiling Planet’s tableware is a breath of fresh air amongst the towering amount of plastic tableware currently on offer. Having just introduced the bowls into the Smiling Planet tableware range, and plans to introduce a colouring book, gift set and cups, Olivia and her team are extremely busy – So we were very chuffed that she sat down to participate in our Seven Statements interview:
1) I started my business because……. I have wanted to have my own line since I was a little girl. My husband and I saw there was a real need for earth-friendly products that are beautifully designed, practical, and full of joy – that’s what smiling planet is all about.
2) The best part of my job is…….. two-fold: designing with my husband and getting to know wonderful people around the world as they are touched by smiling planet.
3) My biggest challenge is ……. keeping up with my ever-expanding to do list. Help!
4) My typical day involves …… dealing with sales fulfillment, manufacturing logistics, design, and expansion.
5) I relax by …… walking on the beach with my husband, meditating, kissing my children, and yoga. My husband and I just finished a 21 day detox that has put me in a wonderful state of being alive.
6) I tread a little lighter on the environment by ….. recycling whenever possible, by using less of just about everything compared to my earlier days, and by spreading an earth-friendly ethos with smiling planet.
7) In the next year I hope to ….. see Smiling Planet expand into more beautiful things for the home. I hope to see one of our books animated. And I hope to see Smiling Planet on every continent – that means we need be in South America and Antarctica too.
